Brief summary of purpose:

The Director of Accounting Operations is a key strategic partner to management across the organization. The role requires demonstrated proficiency in payroll and accounts payable processing in addition to a track record of continuous business process improvement. The role requires a superior knowledge of payroll regulations and accounts payable business processing. The role will also include preparation of abandoned property filings and oversight of staff to perform required due diligence procedures. The role requires exceptional business process documentation skills and ability to work closely with both external auditors and state taxing authorities.

The Director will use creative means and their significant knowledge base to evaluate and solve complex problems, gather and analyze relevant data and exercise independent judgement in the development of appropriate recommendations and solutions. The Director has significant latitude in planning and executing their workload and will operate independently within a broadly defined set of corporate policies and practices that they help to develop and enforce. It is expected that the Director will provide guidance that could have substantial impact on the Organization and its resources, therefore, they will need to successfully interact with management and senior personnel on matters requiring coordination across organizational lines. The successful candidate will have extensive expertise and the ability to design, develop, lead, coach and retain a high performing operational team.

Responsibilities

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Work seamlessly within the accounts payable system to record / approve transactions in order to appropriately report the financial activity of the organization

  • Oversight of premium refund processing

  • Review / perform internal account reconciliations with a high degree of accuracy

  • Respond to all audit requests by external auditors, state regulators and taxing authorities related to accounts payable, payroll and abandoned property

  • Manage bi-monthly payroll process and ensure compliance with state payroll taxes in approximately 20 states

  • Prepare abandoned property compliance and state filings for review by the VP Corporate Controller

  • Develop process documentation for payroll processing and accounting processes for Fallon Health Weinberg

  • Oversight of MLR member refund processing and documentation of process

  • Manage department activities through the oversight of staff which may reside in different functions, support different locations / products and have varying degrees of technical competency

  • Assemble an effective and efficient team of key resources – motivate, mentor, lead and coach them in a way that leads to overall departmental success

  • Develop and present actionable recommendations and solutions to management that will impact key financial operations

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance or equivalent experience and Certified Payroll Professional (CPP)

License/Certifications:

Certified Payroll Professional Preferred

Experience:

Demonstrated proficiency in performing accounting, analytic assignments, accounts payable and payroll

  • At least 8+ years of experience in a managed care environment (will consider other relevant health care, social service, insurance or not-for-profit experience)

  • Experienced user of software applications necessary to achieve job requirements (ex. Oracle, Smart View, DayForce, etc.)

  • Microsoft Office super-user

  • Strong knowledge of the following:

  • Accounts Payable processing

  • Payroll processing

  • Abandoned property process and filings

  • MAR, Independent Financial and SOC 1 audit requirements

  • Process documentation
